Alumnus Marc Mangel elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Marc Mangel, distinguished research professor of applied mathematics and statistics in the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz, has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies.

Marc graduated with a PhD from UBC in 1978 under the supervision of Colin Clark and Don Ludwig. On his CV he lists his degree as “Applied Mathematics and Statistics”, which is what the IAM was in those early days before Statistics broke off and formed a department. In an e-mail he wrote, “The training that I received from Don Ludwig and Colin Clark when a student at IAM(S) was fundamental to the rest of my career.”
