The mammalian hippocampus, composed of serially connected subfields, participates in a variety of functions involving memory. It has been postulated that parallel circuitry embedded within hippocampal subfields may underlie such functional diversity. Here, I will present our work—spanning experimental, computational, and mathematical neuroscience—that shows distinct processes of memory that can emerge from parallel hippocampal circuits.
